SUMMARY:Webinar: What's the Matter: Clean Air Festival
DESCRIPTION:What's the Matter: Clean Air Festival\nMarina Walker\nFounder\,
  What's the Matter CIC\nWhat's the Matter — Air Pollution Events &amp\;
Awareness\, London\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe all breathe air. But not all air is e
qual.\n\nAir pollution isn't just an environmental issue. It shapes health
\, childhood\, and life expectancy. And it falls hardest on those who had
no say in where they live. Why has clean air become a luxury?\nWhat's the
Matter is a new environmental health festival that explores how art\, hea
lthcare\, research and community engagement can work together to improve p
ublic understanding of air pollution and inspire action.\n\n\nIn this webi
nar we hear from Marina Walker the Founder of What's the Matter a Communit
y Interest Company about the festival that creates opportunities for peopl
e to experience\, discuss and respond to environmental health in ways that
are creative\, participatory and rooted in everyday life. The first editi
on brought together NHS hospitals\, schools\, universities\, local authori
ties\, researchers\, artists and community organisations across London.\n\
nActivities included exhibitions in hospital settings\, clinician workshop
s\, community art installations\, citizen science\, schools programmes and
public discussions\, all designed to translate complex research into acce
ssible experiences. Throughout the festival\, we explored how creative eng
agement can complement scientific evidence—helping people connect with d
ata emotionally as well as intellectually\, and building agency rather tha
n anxiety.\n\nWe work with artists who know what it's like to breathe poll
uted air. They make things that catch people's eyes and make them feel som
ething\, opening up space for curiosity and conversation.\nOur ambition is
to develop What's the Matter into a platform for environmental health en
gagement\, supporting researchers\, healthcare organisations and public bo
dies to communicate evidence in ways that foster understanding\, collabora
tion and meaningful behaviour change.\nAir pollution remains one of the gr
eatest environmental threats to human health\, yet public understanding of
its causes\, impacts and solutions remains far too limited. We need a nat
ional air quality awareness campaign that empowers people with the knowled
ge\, tools and confidence to reduce their exposure and advocate for cleane
r environments. What’s the Matter is an exciting example of how art\, he
althcare\, science and communities can come together to make the invisible
visible and inspire meaningful action.\n\nProfessor Sir Stephen Holgate C
