“How do we conceptualise, synthesise and effectively articulate, to a wide audience of stakeholders and academics from different disciplinary backgrounds, the multiple interactions between low carbon transport and health/wellbeing?”

We will critically evaluate existing knowledge including evidence relating to uptake, CO2 reduction and health benefits (including via intermediate indicators) of previous low-carbon transport schemes; to develop and populate a comprehensive, systems-based transdisciplinary conceptual framework for understanding the range of interactions, co-benefits and potential trade-offs in the transport-health-environment-wellbeing nexus. Mapping each system of interest in relation to others will reveal hidden interdependencies, transforming design of low-carbon transport interventions.

Our research focuses on building the shared foundations that enable the Hub to deliver meaningful, real-world impact. It is developing a practical, user-focused conceptual framework that brings together evidence on how low-carbon transport affects health and inequalities, including beneficial, adverse and unintended consequences. The framework will be translated into practical tools and insights that improve how low-carbon transport interventions are designed, appraised, evaluated and communicated. These outputs will help to reduce the risk of unintended consequences, narrow health inequalities, increase public acceptability and maximise the health benefits of low-carbon transport interventions. Alongside these are outputs that support the Hub’s interdisciplinary collaboration and decision making, including a shared glossary of key terms with accompanying lay summaries, agreed approaches to authorship and ways of working, and regular internal webinars to share learning and strengthen shared understanding.
